A photo of my son in the hospital recently. He was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes on April 5th. His glucose was 912 when he was brought into the hospital.
He watched them do every blood draw, accu check etc. They were testing and drawing blood every 2 hours for the first 12 hours. Then it went to 3 hours. He had been picked so many times. Poor Guy! He got used to it, best as anyone can. They would come in with his insulin and he would tell them where to give the injection. He always remembered where the last one was given. LOL For those who know him, that is a big thing for him to remember that.
Now he's been on the other scale of it, on the low side. His numbers have been 32, 54, 51 at night. I've had to physically wake him to get some juice etc. in him the last couple nights. He sleeps right through the testing. For the most part he is doing well.
This mom can't be happier!
Have a Great Day!
Michelle

ReplyDeleteHi Michelle.
ReplyDeleteI'm Bennet. A dad of two T1D teens. It had been almost a decade since the our first diagnosis. Type 1 can be tough. I know I felt a little lost at first. I have many good friends who felt the same way and found that connecting with peers helps steer though the fog and eventually find a new normal.
If there is anything I can do to help, I am happy to share. I write a blog about being a T1 parent and general diabetes stuff. It is www.YDMV.net (Your Diabetes May Vary - it will for sure, vary is what it dies best.) I have a bunch of post for Newbie here: http://www.ydmv.net/2008/01/newbie-advice.html but there are the two most important things to know, you didn't do anything to cause it and you will fine a new normal (and the bonus round is there is a community you can turn to who get every thing you feel.)
It is a strong and vibrant diabetes online community (we call it the D.O.C.) that will embrace your family should you need embracing, we'll laugh and cry with you. Here is a little post that has a few community links. http://diabetesadvocates.org/c/parents-of-children-newly-diagnosed-with-diabetes-may-feel/
Welcome to the club nobody want anyone to be in but we are all happy we know each other none the less.
Bennet
